Can an adult learn the piano?

Delana Green

We’ve all heard the horror stories of people who start learning a musical instrument and are too embarrassed to keep going. But, in reality, it’s never too late to learn an instrument—and there are many advantages you can reap from it!

1. Music is a universal language -

I will never forget traveling to Peru when I was 13 and hearing a familiar song being sung by the congregation of a church. I knew all the words, and so did they. We could listen to each other, and even without learning their language...know what the other person was singing with their words.
Music is a universal language because it is a form of communication that can be understood by people from all over the world. There are different languages and dialects for every country, but music does not have these barriers. Music can be communicated through singing, playing instruments or even just listening to it.

No matter where you're from, music is one of the few things that can unite people of all ages and cultures. With a piano, you can learn to play any music genre you want.
2. It's an escape -
Whenever life gets hard or stressful, having a piano on hand can provide a space of comfort and solitude to retreat to.
For me personally, the piano has always been my escape when life gets hard or stressful. I can go to my room and play on my own piano to relax and find peace in solitude. This is what makes the instrument so special to me: it provides comfort when I need it most.
 3. It's affordable -
You no longer have to pay thousands of dollars a year. You can learn for as little as $40 a month. Or even less!  it's never been easier for adults to learn how to play the piano.
One of the best ways to learn a new skill is through online learning. This is because it provides convenience, flexibility and affordability.
With so many technologies and online teachers it's never been easier for adults to learn how to do things like cooking, photography and more.
4. You don't need any prior knowledge -
Whether you're just starting out or have been playing for years, there are always new songs and techniques to be learned with the piano as your instrument of choice!
Because there are different strategies to playing piano, or different types of pianists (chords vs notation) you can learn how to play your favorite songs so fast!
5. Play with others -
Playing music with others is exhilarating! If you don't have other musicians around that want to get together, there are many great ways to find people to play with. It's fun to be able to pull out those piano skills in the middle of a Christmas party because you know how to play Jingle Bells.
Not only is it a fun little anecdote, but you can play along with others too! Someone pulls in the Guitar, a strong singer, and suddenly you have a make shift band performing.
Finally, if you're feeling adventurous, there are also online communities where you can chat with like-minded musicians from all over the world! There is a connection that musicians share and it’s because they all know this language and can speak it to each other.
